Hallmark premiered a new line of movies on August 28, 2022! They are now making some new movies under their Mahogany brand! “Unthinkably Good Things” was the first of several new releases under the Mahogany brand, and not only was it a fantastic movie, it was historic too. It aired across all three Hallmark network channels at the same time, and features a cast made up almost entirely of people of color. This was wonderful, it has real issues and real conversations and I can’t wait to see what other movies come out of this series! Let’s dive into the review for “Unthinkably Good Things!”

Mahogany Series:

What is the Mahogany series going to entail? I’ve got a quote straight from Hallmark’s Crown Media press release to explain:

“The slate of movies are rooted in the iconic Hallmark greeting card line of the same name. Mahogany will expand Crown Media’s content offerings with powerful storytelling that exemplifies Hallmark’s core ethos – family, community, human connection, positivity and the transformational power of love – through the unique lens of Black culture.”

My Review:

First and foremost, this was a movie about friendship. Sure, there’s some love story to see here and there, and each of the main three characters has their own unique challenge in the love department. But above all of that, it’s about a lifelong friendship of these three ladies and how they are there for each other during the rough patches of their lives.

The scenery in this movie is fantastic. Italy is beautiful always. I loved getting to see the Italian countryside and the city, too. And how about the immersion into the Italian culture and all the food, too! I was drooling for some of those meals!

Each of the three ladies is at a crossroads in their careers and in their love lives, and that really puts a lot of story into this movie. I love how they navigate it together. It’s even better that they have real conversations about very adult topics. Generally, in the usual Hallmark movies we don’t get a lot of cancer, fertility, and divorce talk. I applaud the writers of this movie on all of that for sure.

I love that the group of girls don’t get along all the time. It’s not realistic that they would! So I love that they show the tension in the girlfriend relationships too. I really enjoued that these ladies were real people with real problems and history. And my favorite quote from the entire movie is:

“Fall in love with your fresh start.”

– Allison, Unthinkably Good Things

This movie made me want to stop and call my best friends and tell them I love them for sure. And hey – if one of us could work out teaching in Tuscany for a year, we’ll be happy to come over and join just like these gals did! Friendship is so important, and it’s something to cherish and nurture as we get older.

I loved this movie and I highly recommend if you’ve not watched it yet!

Here’s a quick look at what the Deck The Hallmark Podcast Fellas thought about his movie:

  • Bran – “The movie was ok to me as a whole. I loved the music from this movie. I really appreciated the lived-in relationships of the friends and the conversation about the Black experience. It is beautiful and well done.”
  • Brian – “I love the effort and what Hallmark is doing with this series. It was refreshing to have a girlfriend group be front and center, and not their relationships.”
  • Dan – “This movie was historic and was a landmark event for Hallmark. You get to hear about the Black Experience, you get difficult adult conversations about infertility, cancer, and career, and the dynamic is wonderful between the friends.”

Location, Location, Location

This movie was filmed entirely on location in Italy! Specifically in the Tuscany region, including the cities of Frascati and Viterbo. And the pictures are just gorgous. And once again, my bucket list is updated with new places to travel and visit! As soon as possible!

Fun Film Facts

This movie was written, directed, and produced by Black women. I love that. And the movie is fantastic. I don’t know that that’s a fun film fact so much as it’s amazing and we need more of that! Keep it coming, Hallmark!

Wrap Up – Unthinkably Good Things

The first Mahogany movie is in the books! I really enjoyed the movie and I thought the story was great. There was so much going on, it could easily have been split into 2-3 movies, which would have been AWESOME. But even with all the things going on, it was still a great movie. I love the representation. I loved hearing about the Black experience from a Black woman. More of this Hallmark! I loved this all the way around. If you’ve not seen it yet, definitely put it on your list! Until then, Happy Hallmarking!
