Happy New Year!! The Christmas season is over and it’s the new year! Welcome, 2023! I can’t wait to see what Hallmark has to offer for this month! New Year New Movie season is always a breath of fresh air. It’s festive and wintery and a break from Christmas movies. I’m not sure how “wintery” this year’s January lineup is going to be, but it’s going to be fantastic anyway! Let’s get going on the “The Dog Lover’s Guide to Dating” movie review!

My Review:

This movie entertained me thoroughly. I love Corey Sevier and I really enjoyed Hallmark newcomer, Rebecca Dalton. There is no winter whatsoever in this movie. There is no New Year’s whatsoever in this movie. But it has dogs, Corey Sevier, and the background of Saint John’s in Newfoundland, Canada. So I’m here for it!

Plot

Alex is a dog trainer. Simon needs Alex to teach him to be around his love interest’s dog, also named Simon. (Which makes for several really funny jokes along the way.)

Simon ends up helping Alex with a fundraiser to save the animal shelter and shocker, they fall in love with each other. There are a few obstacles along the way, but it’s a sweet little love story that I really enjoyed.

Actors

Corey Sevier is all over the place on Hallmark in the last year. He’s had a ton of movies and I really enjoy him every time he’s on screen. Just this year he’s been in “Road Trip Romance”, “Pumpkin Everything”, and “Noel Next Door.” Rebecca Dalton is new to the Hallmark Channel but I found her to be an absolute delight! More about her HERE.

The Bottom Line

I totally enjoyed this movie! Is it as good as the Christmas movies? Nope. Is it plenty entertaining and heart-warming? Sure is! Plus it has some really cute pups! I was totally locked in and entertained the entire time watching this movie. Let me know what you think once you’ve watched it!

Hot Takes!

Here’s a quick look at what the Deck The Hallmark Podcast Fellas thought about his movie:

  • Bran – “This movie is unfortunate. This is becoming a trend for January movies, and this one is a real dud.”
  • Brian – “I thought this was a cool idea, hearing about it and thinking about that. I didn’t laugh at the movie a lot. The movie was a little flat. I didn’t think Alex and Simon had a lot of Chemistry.”
  • Dan – “This movie is abysmal. It is really tough to sit through this movie. The acting and writing is really low quality. Not a lot to pull for. Not a lot to cheer for here.”

Location, Location, Location

“The Dog Lover’s Guide to Dating” was filmed in St. Johns in Newfoundland & Labrador. And it is just GORGEOUS scenery. Truly, the location was, by far, the best part of the movie. St. John’s is now on my travel bucket list for sure. It’s the most Eastern part of Canada that you can travel to, and it is just gorgeous.

Fun Film Facts

This movie is based on a book! And I thought it would be a fun romance book to read. It’s an ACTUAL book about dating if you have dogs and how to meet people to date. It is a self-help book. I kid you not. For real.

The first movie of 2023 is under our belts! While it wasn’t my very favorite, I did find it enjoyable to watch. Coming off of the best year of Christmas movies Hallmark has ever done, it’s a tough act to follow, that’s for sure. I enjoyed the story and my favorite part was the scenery for sure. I can’t wait to jump into more of the New Year New Movie movies and see what we all think! Let me know what you think of this one! Until then… Happy Hallmarking!!
