Fall is finally here! And when the temperatures finally start to come down outside, I’m always ready to get my Fall cocktail menu in order! And in the Fall, I tend to go for heavier drinks that usually involve whiskey. Particularly, I adore Fireball whisky (I’m not spelling whisky wrong — Fireball is Canadian whisky and they don’t use the “e”. I don’t make the rules!) with all its cinnamon spicy goodness! And, in my opinion, if you are going to have a drink to warm you up on a Fall night (this is no hot summer day cocktail!), you need to mix it with ginger ale, because, hey, it’s warm, cozy, and has that same spicy flavor you are looking for in your drink. Plus this cocktail is one of the easiest cocktails you’ll ever make. Let’s get to it!

Alcohol Disclaimer

Obviously, you should be of legal drinking age to partake in these cocktails, which in the United States is 21. Enjoy your alcoholic beverage, but don’t overindulge. And for the love of Mike, don’t drink and drive. Just be cool. That’s all I’m asking.

Whiskey and Whiskey Cocktails

Whiskey drinkers are usually very particular about their cocktails. They all debate what the perfect mixer is to go with their drink of choice. And some would argue that a whiskey cocktail should just be the pure whiskey and nothing else, no mixers at all! I prefer to mix my whiskey with ginger ale, and there are tons of combinations out there you could try!

Bottles of name brand whiskey like J&B, Wild Turkey, Johnnie Walker, Bell's, and Jack Daniels

And there are SO many types of whiskies! You’ve got your bourbon whiskey choices, such as Evan Williams, Southern Comfort, Woodford Reserve, Ezra Brooks, Maker’s Mark, Four Roses, Wild Turkey, Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Basil Hayden’s, etc. And then you’ve got your whiskey choices that are not bourbon, but still a delight mixed with any kind of ginger ale recipe. Some of those choices could be Glenlivet, Seagrams, Jameson, Johnnie Walker, Monkey Shoulder, and Crown Royal.

Personal Preference

For me, a total amateur and certainly no expert on all things whisky (or whiskey!), good whiskey is the one that you like best. Don’t get tangled up in all the rye whiskey versus bourbon versus scotch versus whatever else. Mix it with whatever you like, but I say every one of these would be delicious mixed with ginger ale. The ginger flavors just work with whiskey and bourbon.

Ingredients for Fall Ginger Fireball Cocktail, including a jar of maraschino cherries, a bottle of Diet Ginger Ale and a bottle of Fireball Whisky

Ingredients

Fireball whisky – There’s just no substitute for the real thing. Several whiskey companies have come out with something similar (Like Jack Daniels Tennessee Fire or Evan Williams Fire), but it’s not as good, or potent-ly cinnamon-y, as actual Fireball whisky. The other kinds may or may not have a smoother flavor. But I think you need the edge of Fireball for this cocktail.

Ginger Ale – Or Diet Ginger Ale – I used Canada Dry Diet Ginger Ale, as this drink is plenty sweet enough on its own! Use whatever brand you love. This is your very own ginger ale cocktail after all!

Maraschino Cherries & Juice – You don’t want to skip this step. I get the ones in a jar that don’t have stems or pits. I also prefer the smaller cherries over the jumbo ones, if you have a variety to choose from at the store.

Ice – This drink is best ICE cold. Even though it’s going to warm you up!

Recommended Equipment

We aren’t fancy over here! You can use whatever kind of cocktail glass you’d like for this drink. Some people are very particular about what kind of glass they use for their cocktails. Some people like a highball glass, others a rocks glass, I say any kind will do. I personally prefer the heavier rocks glass to make this drink in. It turns out beautiful and it’s just gorgeous to look at while you sip it!

  • Rocks Cocktail Glasses – I like the heaviness of a rocks glass. you can use a tall glass here if you’d like!
  • Jigger – For measuring liquor appropriately
  • Bar Spoon – For mixing — or you can just use a regular spoon.

Mixing Instructions

Step 1

Heavy rocks glass filled with ice with a spoon next to it

Fill your rocks glass with ice, almost to the top of the glass.

Step 2

Heavy rocks glass filled with ice and 2 ounces of Fireball Whiskey

Add in 2 ounces of Fireball Whisky.

Step 3

Heavy rocks glass filled with Fireball Whisky and 4 maraschino cherries

Add in 3-4 (or 10) maraschino cherries and one or two spoonfuls of the juice from the jar of cherries as well.

Step 4

Add in ginger ale to the top of the glass, roughly 4-6 ounces.

Step 5

Stir to mix.

You’ll want to taste it and adjust from there. If you need less whisky taste, add more ginger ale. If it’s not cinnamony enough – add a smidge more Fireball Whisky. I find that the 2 ounces of Fireball to 6 ounces of Ginger Ale is a perfect combination.

Notes/Tips

I like the weight and feel of a rocks glass. But if you prefer more ginger ale with your drink, you may want to switch to a tall drink glass so you can add more ginger ale to the mix. I find this combination to be perfect, but you make it just the way you like it!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I don’t like Fireball Whisky. Can I substitute another kind of whiskey?

Absolutely! I think almost every kind of whiskey or bourbon is delicious with ginger ale. I’d keep the cherries though, it adds a little something special! But if I may, try it with some kind of cinnamon whiskey. It’s an absolute warm delight!

Is Fireball Whisky really the best whiskey to mix with ginger ale?

My friends that get quite serious about bourbon and scotch and whiskey all disagree with me and are just appalled that Fireball Whisky is my absolute favorite choice. But I LOVE it and I think it’s the most delightful flavor and it’s my number one favorite cocktail.

Do you have to use ginger ale? I don’t care for the taste of it.

I would say that this cocktail needs the ginger ale. It needs those notes of the warm ginger touch of spice and the carbonated soft drink. You could also use ginger beer. But I don’t think it would be the same with a club soda or seltzer. If you are ok without having the bubbles and soda carbonation, apple juice would be a great substitute. Also, tons of people love Fireball Whiskey mixed with cranberry juice, so maybe try that! Just don’t be a crazy person and mix it with orange juice or grapefruit juice or some nonsense like that!
