Holy cow we are already to the third week of Christmas movies, folks! Halloween is behind us and Thanksgiving is around the corner. I don’t know about you, but, at this time, I’m happily immersed in my Christmas movie land and my DVR is busting at the seams with all the Christmas movie happiness! I freaking adore this time of year and I’m definitely leaning WAY into the Christmas movies this year! As a result, I’ll probably be watching till February, but hey — that’s joy right there for you! Let’s get into this little gem of a movie called “A Magical Christmas Village” and see what we all thought!

My Review:

I could see where on the outside this might look like your cookie cutter run-of-the-mill Hallmark Christmas movie, but I found it to be an absolute delight. I think the Christmas village nostalgia got me and I was going to adore this movie no matter what! Altogether though, it’s a cute little movie with an amazing cast!

Summer (Alison Sweeney) is a super busy single mom of a teenage girl named Chloe (played by Maesa Nicholson who knocks it out of the freaking PARK with her performance). Summer’s eccentric mom, Vivian, comes to live with them at Christmastime and gets out her “Magical” Christmas village to display for the holiday season. Chloe immediately loves the Christmas village.

Grandma Vivian (Marlo Thomas) tells Chloe that if you make a wish on this magical village, it’ll come true. And all of a sudden, the more Chloe tinkers with the village and its accessories, the more she is seeing real-life happenings that coincide with her Village tinkering! Maybe the village is magical after all!

This movie has SUCH an amazing cast! Alison Sweeney is phenomenal, as always. Luke Macfarlane (who is now a REALLY big movie star!) is one of my absolute favorites and he does not disappoint! Additionally, Maesa Nicholson (playing Chloe) is the hit of the movie in my opinion. She’s absolutely wonderful. And then, unquestionably, how can you go wrong with Marlo Thomas? You can’t! Altogether this cast was really special!

The Bottom Line

I loved this movie. On a personal note, both my Grandmothers had really big and beautiful Christmas villages, and this movie took me back to those houses and those Christmases, so this movie holds a really special place in my heart for that reason alone. I adore getting my own Christmas village out each year and this movie reminded me of that. And don’t get me wrong, the movie’s great all on its own without my misty nostalgia here! I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone! I really enjoyed Marlo Thomas and her crazy character! Let me know what you think!

Here’s a quick look at what the Deck The Hallmark Podcast Fellas thought about his movie:

  • Bran – “I adored this movie! You got a village where you can tinker around and it does stuff! I don’t know how you can see that and not love this movie.”
  • Brian – “I loved the opening sequence when they walked through the magical village. And I was pumped up about the ending sequence where they showed the magical village. But everything in between, I was not so high on. It was just ok for me.”
  • Dan – “I hate it. This movie is a boring Christmas magic movie. The most boring version of Christmas magic I have ever seen. This is a dumpster fire.”

Location, Location, Location

“A Magical Christmas Village” was filmed on location in Vancouver, British Colombia. I didn’t catch if they said any specific city that the movie was supposed to be set in, just that it was a suburban area with a small little downtown. This particular movie had a lot of generic sets, so really, it probably could be filmed almost anywhere. The neighborhood and houses they filmed were gorgeous though!

Movie Must Haves:

Usually, I go with several items from the movies that the actors wore or decorations we see on the set of the movie. But for this “Movie Must Haves,” I am going to link to a bunch of different Christmas village sets! If you don’t have one, what better time to start a collection?!

  • Department 56 Snow Villages – These are NOT cheap! However, they are near and dear to my heart as they are what my grandmother had and has now been passed down to me. I have always adored this village. They also have a Mickey Mouse Village, A Dickens Village, and a Peanuts Village! And a Halloween Village!
  • St. Nicholas Square – This is a Kohl’s exclusive, and it’s what we have at our house. I love these houses. They are gorgeous and very reasonably priced!
  • Carole Towne Christmas Village – You can find this collection at Lowes! These are super cute too and seem to be middle-of-the-road on expense.
  • Lemax – Caddington Village – This is Lemax’s most popular Christmas village. I love the detail on the pieces in this collection! It’s available at several locations, namely Michael’s Craft Stores and Ace Hardware, but here is a full list of available sources!
  • The Holiday Aisle Christmas Village – This one is available at Wayfair and has a ton of choices! Lots of these have movement to them!

Fun Film Facts

Maesa Nicholson plays Chloe, and in my opinion, she totally makes the movie. She’s adorable and has such camera presence! I looked her up and to my shock, this is her third Hallmark movie in 2022! She also played in “Curious Caterer: Dying for Chocolate” and “North to Home” this year! Look at her go!

Wrap-Up – “We Need A Little Christmas”

Week 3 already!! Basically, time is flying by! I’m pretty sure it will only go more quickly from here! Undeniably, I really enjoyed “A Magical Christmas Village” and I highly recommend it. Was it groundbreaking with the storyline and full of new ideas? Not at all. Did I particularly care? Not at all! It was whimsical and fun and full of Christmas Spirit and, indeed, that’s everything I am looking for in a feel-good warm and fuzzy Hallmark Christmas movie. Give it a watch and let me know what you think! If you need me, I’ll be unpacking my Christmas village for the year! Until then, Happy Hallmarking!!
